Spreading Jesus' Fame...

Greetings to all,

Welcome to our personal ministry website. We are followers of Jesus whose leadership over the years has taken us to various parts of Alaska. We initially began ministry across Alaska on short-term trips, served for a brief period in Southeast part of the state, moved to Soldotna to be based from a church there, moved to Bethel serving among the Yup’ik people, then moved back to Soldotna to resume pastoral ministry at Soldotna Bible Chapel. During my time as Associate Pastor there, we continued two to three trips per year back to Bethel where I taught courses and conferences at the Alaska Bible Seminary as well as volunteered at KYKD Christian radio ministry. These trips continue each year, but we are now in transition locally in Soldotna for church planting.

While we are grateful to our church, Soldotna Bible Chapel, for all their love and support, we sensed God’s clear leading to launch out for a fresh church plant in the Soldotna-Kenai area that will be specifically poised at reaching the darkest parts of our community. The brokenness we see in addiction, homelessness, incarceration, and broken families requires Jesus followers to pursue with the love and freedom only available in Jesus. God connected us with a church called, Acts247 Recovery Church in Anchorage that is doing this very kind of ministry.

They asked us to consider planting a Soldotna location that would pursue these same dark areas of brokenness in our area. After 6 months of prayer and counsel, we strongly felt God compelling us toward this church plant. As I prayed, God brought me to Acts 20:22 where Paul says he was compelled by the Holy Spirit to go to Jerusalem despite the warning of other believers. Laura and I feel compelled by the Spirit to do this Acts247 type church plant in Soldotna. Thus, we are currently beginning efforts for this church plant, which involves a return for us raising our living expenses for the church plant. Many financially supported us while we lived in Bethel (some of you still do for our continual trips there), and we ask that you prayerfully consider rejoining our support team for this renewed church planting focus.

Additionally, we serve at a local transitional living home for women called Freedom House. I oversee biblical counseling/discipleship efforts there along with other women and we hope to soon see a men’s Freedom House started as well.

As you may already know, we run an online ministry of the written word and film aimed to inspire and equip more believers and churches across Alaska to better engage the broken. Check it out at AscribeGlory.com and our outreach resource at theSpreadofHisFame.com.

All that being said, we are so glad you chose to visit us today! We praise God for giving us a passion for cross-cultural ministry in Alaska and beyond. We are so grateful to our Gap Stander (Jesus Christ) for standing in our sin gap and providing a way of redemption. It is our privilege and joy to now serve Him through being "gap standers" in our needy world; specifically for us in Alaska.

Please continue praying for us as we strive to be a small piece of the church advancing work across Alaska, both in Soldotna and across the YK-Delta region, and extending worldwide! What a privilege it is to serve collectively together for the fruition of Matthew 16:13-19 (the building of Jesus' church)! Jesus is setting people free and we are stoked to see Him continue doing just that through the Acts247 Soldotna church plant, Freedom House, our online ministry, and our outreach/discipleship in the Bethel region!

Thank you for your interest and prayers!

For the Spread of His Fame,

Derek & Laura Black along with our boys Elias & Jathan
