Spreading Jesus' Fame...
Greetings to all,
Welcome to what previously was our missions ministry website. After following God's leading to return to our church base on full-time pastoral staff as an Associate Pastor, this site ended up sitting mostly dormant. Early in 2016, the site was hacked and crashed. After contemplating the purpose and future of this web presence, I decided to rebuild the entire site. Our purpose for thegapstander.com is now to chronicle our future short-term mission trips as well as host my personal blog.
That being said, we are so glad you chose to visit us today! While I now serve on staff at Soldotna Bible Chapel as the Pastor of Adult Ministries, I still have a God-given passion for cross-cultural ministry in Alaska and beyond. We are so grateful to our Gap Stander (Jesus Christ) for standing in our sin gap and providing a way of redemption. It is our privilege and joy to now serve Him through being "gap standers" in our needy world; specifically for us in Alaska.
We are currently based in Soldotna on the Kenai Peninsula about a 2.5-hour drive south of Anchorage. Beyond the road system and main tourist areas, the state is covered with over 200 scattered remote native villages--many of which struggle with high rates of destructive addictions. We praise God for the villages that already have local churches, but there are many still in need of their own church. While the very essence of the Gospel and the body of Christ is multicultural, we believe that the Gospel spreads best through local cultural expressions of it. Ultimately, it is our vision to see more Alaskans themselves catch the vision of standing in the gap for the Gospel within their own cultural contexts!
After serving at our church for a 13 month period, we moved to the southwestern village hub of Bethel for church planting ministry. However, in God's sovereignty He transitioned us back to Soldotna to our church in May of 2013. In addition to local outreach and discipleship, our church's heart for missions extends throughout the world, including our periodic involvement in outreach/discipleship efforts back in the Bethel region. Through our involvement in ministry while living in Bethel, God orchestrated a relationship with KYKD Christian radio and Alaska Bible Seminary. It is through these two ministries that our current short-term operations continue.
Please continue praying for us as we strive to be a small piece of the church advancing work across Alaska, both in Soldotna and across the YK-Delta region, and extending worldwide! What a privilege it is to serve collectively together for the fruition of Matthew 16:13-19 (the building of Jesus' church)!
Thank you for your interest and prayers!
For the Spread of His Fame,
Derek & Laura Black along with our boys Elias & Jathan
